Parenting has a way of finding your tender spots.

Breaking the cycle of trauma

You thought you’d already worked through all the messy parts of your life. But the way our childhood experiences shape us can be felt long after we’ve grown up and become parents ourselves. Childhood trauma can come from experiencing abuse, neglect or exposure to violence, but also from other adverse childhood experiences that are hard to point to as traumatic-like living in chaotic or unpredictable home, emotional invalidation, or growing up feeling unwanted or chronically misunderstood. Maybe you were raised by parents who struggled with their own unresolved trauma, unknowingly continuing the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

It’s common for childhood trauma to resurface when you become a parent.

Everyday parenting moments can easily become trauma triggers. Childhood memories that you never questioned may suddenly take on new meaning. Long standing issues in your relationships with your own parents might become even more troublesome. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, difficulty trusting others. Feeling constantly on edge, waiting for the next bad thing to happen or shut down, disconnected.

Maybe you notice your perfectionism intensifying, like you’re never quite good enough.

You feel broken in some way. And it’s exhausting.

Now that it’s your turn to provide comfort and safety to your child, those old hurts -and the negative beliefs they helped to create-are difficult to shake.

You’re not broken.

It makes sense if you do feel broken. The belief that there is something fundamentally wrong with you is one of the most deeply felt and long-lasting effects of childhood trauma. This belief can spill over into how you navigate fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment and early parenting-and make everything feel harder.

Trauma therapy is about more than fixing what feels broken. It’s meant to help you stop repeating old patterns that no longer serve you and build new ones that support you. It’s about treating yourself with compassion and learning that you can create safety and connection in your relationships and in your parenting.

And it’s about helping you break the cycle of trauma.

I offer an attachment-focused approach trauma therapy and EMDR-exploring not only traumatic memories causing distress but also repairing the negative beliefs and problematic emotional patterns that are rooted in trauma and continue to feel stuck.

Trauma therapy helps you understand the connection between your past experiences and your current reactions. You’ll learn ways to:

  • Calm overwhelm in the moment

  • Understand your triggers with greater compassion

  • Recognize stress before it reaches a breaking point

  • Feel more connected to your body and emotions

  • Response instead or react

  • Move through anxiety, panic or shutdown with greater confidence

An Attachment Focused Approach to Trauma Therapy and EMDR

EMDR therapy for experiences that still feel stuck.

For many clients, EMDR therapy becomes an important part of the healing process. EMDR help the brain and nervous system process memories and early experiences that still feel emotionally charge, overwhelming, or unresolved. You don’t have to tell every detail or your story, and you don’t have to relive every painful moment. Instead, EMDR helps you reprocess early experiences, so they feel like something that happened rather than something you’re still living through.

After EMDR therapy, clients often describe it this way:

“It feels further away now”

“I can think about it without spiraling”

“I don’t feel pulled under anymore”

Our work always begins with creating safety and stability, moving forward at a pace that feels right for you.
