FAQs: Online EMDR Therapy for Women and Moms in Los Angeles and throughout California

Can EMDR Therapy be done as effectively online?

Yes, studies are showing that EMDR done virtually is safe and just as effective as in-person EMDR therapy. Online EMDR has become commonplace, and the framework and process of EMDR therapy is the same online as it is when done in person. In my online therapy practice, I offer EMDR for women and moms throughout Los Angeles and California.

As with any good therapy, the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important thing to consider (whether online or in person).

What are the advantages of virtual EMDR therapy for busy moms?

New and expectant moms are busy-and often overwhelmed-with scheduling and planning. Adding therapy appointments to an already hectic week can feel like too much. The convenience of online therapy can help make it possible to tend to your own emotional well-being.

  • Online EMDR allows you the comfort and convenience of being in your own home. As a new or expectant mom, it's much easier to make therapy a regular part of your routine when you can just hop online with your therapist.

  • Meeting virtually also allows for more flexibility around scheduling and saves time on travel, making therapy more accessible for busy moms. No need to arrange for childcare or pack up the bags. Appointments can be held during naptime or your lunch hour, making it a little bit easier to prioritize some time for yourself.

  • Meeting from home means that your partner can attend sessions (or part of a session) with you if needed and allows you to be present for your family when necessary. Pets, babies and breastfeeding are welcome in your sessions!

How can online EMDR help during pregnancy and postpartum?

EMDR is used to treat many kinds of trauma and PTSD. In my practice I use EMDR therapy to:

  • Process and heal past traumas (childhood traumas, attachment wounds, abuse and neglect)

  • Decrease the distress of triggers and trauma reminders

  • Alleviate the distress/PTSD symptoms from previous pregnancy & birth related traumas

  • Treat postpartum depression and anxiety

  • Help prepare you for labor, deliver, fertility treatment and postpartum life

  • Diminish fears/phobias of pregnancy and birth

  • Teach you skills to build up your inner strengths, calm your body and mind and keep you grounded in the present.

Can online EMDR help me heal from birth trauma?

EMDR helps to diminish the effects of a traumatic birth experience and other traumas that occur around fertility journey, pregnancy and postpartum. EMDR reduces distress that can interfere with caring for yourself and your family and works to provide relief from symptoms including nightmares, flashbacks, depression, intrusive thoughts, and panic.

How do I prepare for my online EMDR therapy session?

Some special considerations for EMDR therapy include:

  • A good internet connection is essential to having a good online EMDR therapy experience. Test out your connection before your session, and have your computer, tablet or phone ready to go.

  • Remember, this time is for you! Consider what you’ll need to feel comfortable and to fully engage in therapy- a do not disturb sign, your pet, your baby, a weighted blanket or snacks:)

  • After care: Many people feel tired after an EMDR session. If possible, try to avoid scheduling too much following your therapy session and talk about a self-care plan with your therapist.
